Shultz Farm Riparian Buffer Restoration
Ducks Unlimited in partnership with the Montgomery County NRCS office restored 2.5 acres of riparian buffer on the Schultz property this past spring. As part of the restoration, Mr. Schultz agreed to implement 2,525 ft of stream bank fencing which would exclude his dairy herd from the stream. With the help of a local contractor, Ducks Unlimited was able to construct a stream crossing that allowed the cattle to get water from the stream without damaging the banks and causing an erosion problem. The final part of this restoration project involved planting native trees and shrubs along the fenced buffer. This creates wildlife habitat, reduces erosion and prevents excess nutrients from entering the stream.
